How to Get to Danum Valley

There's no direct road for self-drivers and no public transport into the conservation area. Here's exactly how travellers actually get there, from anywhere in the world.

Step 1: Fly to Lahad Datu

Lahad Datu (airport code LDU) has daily domestic flights from Kota Kinabalu, and connections via Kuala Lumpur. There's no direct international service, so international visitors first fly into Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu, then take a short domestic hop.

  • From Kuala Lumpur: fly to Kota Kinabalu first (2.5 hrs), then connect to Lahad Datu (55 min), or route via Tawau.
  • From Kota Kinabalu: direct flights to Lahad Datu run several times daily, about 55 minutes.
  • Overland alternative: buses from Kota Kinabalu to Lahad Datu take around 8 hours — scenic, but only worth it if you're not short on time.

Step 2: The 4WD transfer

From Lahad Datu, it's roughly 80 kilometres to Danum Valley Field Centre — about 2.5 hours by 4WD. The road is a mix of paved and gravel sections, shared with logging trucks, so a proper 4WD (not a standard sedan) is essential. This transfer is arranged directly by whichever lodge you've booked and is normally included in your package price.

Good to know

You cannot drive yourself into the conservation area — permits are issued only to the lodges and their vehicles. Independent self-drive access isn't possible.

Getting there — common questions

Can I self-drive to Danum Valley?

No. Permits for the access road are issued only to lodge vehicles and their drivers — independent self-drive access isn't permitted inside the conservation area.

Is the road safe?

Yes, though it's shared with heavy logging trucks and has unpaved sections. Lodge transfer drivers do this route daily and are experienced with the conditions.

Do I need to arrive in Lahad Datu the night before?

Not necessarily — transfers are usually timed around flight arrivals, but check with your lodge, since afternoon arrivals can mean a late transfer.
