There's no month where it won't rain in Danum Valley — but the difference between seasons is real, and worth planning around if your dates are flexible.
March – October: the drier season
Rain still falls, but showers are generally shorter and more predictable, trails are less muddy, and fruiting trees during this window tend to draw in more primates — including better odds for orangutan sightings. This is also when the lodges are busiest, so book well ahead.

April, July, August: peak season
These are the busiest months at both Borneo Rainforest Lodge and the Field Centre — good weather combined with school holidays in several source markets. Book 2–3 months in advance if travelling during these windows.
November – February: the wetter season
Heavier, more sustained rainfall, muddier trails, and a real chance of extended downpours that reshuffle the day's activities. On the upside: far fewer visitors, a quieter, more atmospheric forest, and lodges sometimes offer low-season rates.
| Season | Months | Trails | Crowds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry season | Mar – Oct | Firmer, easier walking | Busiest |
| Peak season | Apr, Jul, Aug | Good conditions | Book 2–3 months ahead |
| Wet season | Nov – Feb | Muddier, more challenging | Quietest, sometimes cheaper |
If wildlife sightings are your priority, aim for March–October. If you'd rather have the trails to yourself and don't mind rain, the wet season has its own appeal — and better availability on short notice.
